Usage of "по" versus "на" & "в"

Hi everyone,

When carrying the meaning of being located at a given place, what exactly is the difference between "по" and "на & в"? Is it about the motion?

  • Я на дороге = I am on the road but motionless. I'm simply standing on the road. It is where I currently am.

  • Я по дороге = I am on the move on the road. My location is still the road itself but I move along it and not just stand where I am.

Is this correct? And does it carry the same meaning at all times for being at a location? For example, if I stayed at a city for a week and walked along some parts of it... Am I supposed to say "Я гулял по городу" or "Я гулял в городе"? Which one suits better and what are the nuances (even the most subtle ones) between those statements?

Thank you!
